The concept for the retrospective exhibition on the work of Niki de Saint Phalle is based on a subtle interpretation of the passage of time. The artworks, traditionally presented in chronological order, led us to explore a principle that would allow visitors to sense the evolution of the artist’s work. An 80-meter-long gradient, extending along the walls and floor, shifts from a magenta pink to a deep violet, creating a distinctive perspective effect. The elongated, characteristic space of the Schirn appears to change depending on the viewer’s point of view: the color flattens the perception of volume at the far end of the room, creating a tangible physical sensation. The radical simplicity of this concept also made it possible to adapt to the relatively short installation time.
